I. INSTALLATION NOTES
─────────────────────
All of the files contained within the archive you received (either
an EXE, ARJ, or ZIP file) must be placed within a single directory.
Your data files may reside in any directory or on any disk drive. See
the "List of files" section below for files which may be removed if
disk space is limited.
Installing on Floppy Disk
─────────────────────────
WML can be run from a 720k (or greater) floppy disk although it will
access data and operate very slowly. When using floppy disks, it is a
wise idea to have an archival copy (a "master") apart from the one you
use daily (the "working" copy). Use the DISKCOPY command to make a
working copy of a floppy disk, if necessary.
Documentation Files
───────────────────
If you have WordPerfect 5, just load WML.WP. Instructions to reformat
and print are in a comment at the top of the file. If you don't have
WordPerfect or a way to convert the WML.WP file to your word processor,
then just "TYPE WML.TXT > PRN" at the DOS prompt. WML.TXT is an ASCII
file generated from WordPerfect for a "standard printer" and this command
will send it to the printer on port LPT1:. You can substitute the "PRN"
with "LPTx:" where the "x" is 1, 2, or 3.
II. NEW FEATURES
────────────────
04/17/95 ── 2.6b Names screen no longer goes to the 2nd & 3rd date fields
unless the one above is filled.
Changed Actions sub-menu under the File Print/Select/Query
menu: Had the option "Clear Omit flag of selected' but
once entries are Omitted they cannot be selected, so
this option made no sense. Changed it to "Clear all
Omit flags" so it now works on the entire file.
Changed Print/Select/Query Individual window: if you tried
to select a record which was flagged as Bad or Omit WML
would not flag it for printing. Now it gives a message
asking if you want to clear the Bad/Omit flags and
select the entry for printing.
Completed ASCII fixed-field-length file import routine
I left some debugging statements in the "Smart" import
routines in version 2.6, so if you had the Import
Technique set to one of the "Smart" options and you
tried to import a file WML would have paused every time
it manipulated the company name. This has been
corrected and completed - everything works properly now.
Added Data Entry/Messages screen on which you may define
messages which will be printed on every envelope or
label in a batch (e.g., "Address Correction Requested").
Only the data entry screen is in place so far. In the
next version look for message positioning options on
envelope & label Preferences screens.
04/01/95 ── 2.6a Added ability to Select entries by a range of zip codes
(instead of just one code)
Expanded return addresses to 5 lines (instead of 4)
Corrected bug which occurred if ZipCodes.WDT existed
but was empty and ZipCodes.WIX did not exist
(programme would crash with message "Error 11
occurred in module MISC")
03/22/95 ── 2.6 When importing WML used to inform you of entries which
contained potentially bad zip/postal codes. Now it
tallies these entries, flags each of them as
Selected to Print (so they may be easily reviewed),
and informs you when the import is finished.
Corrected error which happened if Esc was pressed
during re-indexing.
Smart Zip was only working on USA & Canadian addresses.
It now functions for International addresses as well.
Internal printer fonts were being displayed even if they
were not available in the orientation needed.
HP DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, DeskJet 500, and DeskJet 500C
print envelopes in Portrait orientation; WML had been
assuming landscape orientation.
Support added for HP DeskJet 500-series, DeskJet 320/310,
and DeskJet 1200 printers.
When creating a new file WML no longer re-indexes group
and abbreviation files.
Corrected memory problem which could crash WML or lock
the computer whenever a disk file list was displayed.
Added new Help/Files & Memory screen
Several screen enhancements and other minor updates
Corrected problem with importing which could cause the
WML to crash or lock the computer if records did not
have a consistent number of fields.
Corrected Smart Name import technique - was splitting
first name into first/last components even if the
surname was already defined.
Lowered registration price to $49.
03/01/95 ── 2.5w Added Epson LQ-570/1070 printer support
Enhanced certain messages and "intelligent" features
Bundled US Zip Codes Data Base with registration
02/08/95 ── 2.5v Corrected Canon BJ-10 line spacing & font list
Corrected bar code printing on dot matrix printers (I
had forgotten to tell WML which printers were
capable of printing graphics!)
Added Canon BJ-200 and Epson LQ-510 printer drivers
Corrected dot matrix printer problems with certain fonts
and operations
Added logic to limit bar code on dot matrix labels when
width of label is too narrow:
■ If label is less than 3-3/16" (80mm) wide auto
11-digit expansion is turned off.
■ If label is less than 2-5/8" (65mm) wide bar code
is limited to 5-digit zip.
02/01/95 ── 2.5u Corrected return address label printing problems
02/01/95 ── 2.5t Corrected error in bar code Correction Character calculation
which occured if sum of zip code was a multiple of 10
Corrected error with last two mail dates which caused the
default values to be wrong when editing them.
Added ability to begin laser labels at a specified row/column
01/28/95 ── 2.5s Updated import to allow symbols in international phone numbers
and warn if an entry seems to contain a bad zip code
Corrected Names Data Entry zip code entry - was looking up
U.S. State abbreviation for non-U.S. entries
01/27/95 ── 2.5r Corrected indexing problem introduced in 2.5p (oops!)
Minor enhancement to Query - lookup now starts with the
last entry added or changed
Added ability for Names Data Entry and Import functions
to filter out a country name of USA or Canada since
WML automatically determines these.
Improved "Smart" import technique
Corrected error which happened if loading an import
definition and you specified the entire file name
instead of just the drive and/or path.
01/27/95 ── 2.5q Special test release - not for distribution.
01/21/95 ── 2.5p Cosmetic improvements to Help/Summary & Help/About screens
Corrected phone number display for US and Canadian
entries with Country Setting is "International"
01/20/95 ── 2.5n Thanks to input from sysop Gerald Himmelein the
following bugs were fixed and new features added:
Corrected: Was not removing trailing spaces from the
Surname field.
Added: Country information is now exported (selectable
fields coming soon)
Corrected: Import was not following City field rule set
on Preferences/Other screen
Corrected: ASCII import thought no fields were assigned
if importing a NAD or other simple text file
Added: Quick Exit - you can press F10 to rapidly exit WML
Added: If you exit WML with a file open it will
automatically be loaded the next time you run WML.
Corrected: Error in ASCII import which caused error 14
and bombed WML, possibly "locking up" the computer.
Corrected: Line spacing for Generic/Daisy Wheel printers
01/11/95 ── 2.5m Enhanced back-up & restore functions, and removed Back-up
Method from Preferences/Other screen (no longer needed).
Added TI MicroWriter laser printer driver
Added option to force adherence to USPS mail guidelines
01/09/95 ── 2.5k Laser envelopes now count and report on entries which were
selected but not printed due to incomplete address.
01/08/95 ── 2.5j Added two new filters on Index/Filter menu
Added number-of-copies feature to label printing; you can
now print up to 9,999 copies of each label.
01/05/95 ── 2.5i Completed Import Duplicate Checking options. WML will
now behave according to the definition on the
Preferences/Other screen.
Added Import Technique definition to control the amount
of translation WML will perform on an input file.
01/05/95 ── 2.5h I put an "f" instead of a "d" in a variable name in the
DBF import routine which caused an error 10. Oops!
12/23/94 ── 2.5g Corrected minor problem on Names data entry screen; WML
was asking for a country name on new entries even
if the country setting was USA or Canada.
12/15/94 ── 2.5f Improved error handling on the Data Entry/Names screen
in cases where the index gets damaged
12/07/94 ── 2.5e Corrected problems with international mailings in which
the country did not print unless the country setting
was "International" and the address was considered
invalid if it did not have data in the State/Prov
field.
11/30/94 ── 2.5d Corrected Query by Group bug which did not correctly
select entries which were in all of the chosen groups
WordPerfect Export now separates first and surname fields
11/17/94 ── 2.5c Cosmetic enhancement to entry look-up window.
Corrected SHARE violation with File/Back-up and
File/Restore functions (affected networks and some
Windows users).
11/15/94 ── 2.5b Changed impact (dot matrix) continuous label printing
so that it closes the printer port after printing a
test label in case a network or other spooled
printer is used.
11/12/94 ── 2.5a Names look-up window now reflects chosen index (if
Company Name sequence is active, company name shows
first, etc.)
Improved dot matrix label spacing
11/10/94 ── 2.5 Updated ASCII import to allow either CR or LF to signal
the end of a record, to allow international
characters, and to allow quotes & commas within
quotation-bounded fields.
First release with working WordPerfect import.
Removed Unregistered Edition delay.
10/25/94 ── 2.4y Fixed problem with reading older CONFIG files (prior to
(beta test version 2.3 or so).
version) Added support for HP LaserJet 4+
Removed Unregistered opening delay & reduced exit delay
Added bar code printing for dot matrix printers
Added label content definitions on Preferences/Continuous
Labels screen
Improved dot matrix labels printing to allow line spacing to
be adjusted if number of lines will not fit on labels at
standard LPI setting. Some printers use 1/180" spacing,
others use 1/216" spacing; if the spacing is wrong on your
printer I'd really appreciate knowing about it!
Fixed laser labels line spacing problem
Fixed problems with bar code printing on laser labels
Enhanced group file usage to allow for a group file to be
used if in the current directory, otherwise the WML.EXE
directory is used
When changing a file's name and/or description, the old
description was not displaying. Fixed.
Fixed cursor key usage on last mailing date fields.
10/13/94 ── 2.4x Fixed minor problem with international postal codes and
zip codes which are not in the Smart Zip file.
Improved handling mixed international & domestic entries
10/12/94 ── 2.4w Fixed problem with opening files when only one file is
present.
Fixed problems with SHARE (networks) on the Preferences
Printers screen (caused error 70 - permission denied).
Changed Phone Book to follow the selected index sequence
rather than always printing in personal name order
09/29/94 ── 2.4u Corrected problem with abbreviation checking which occurred
if spaces were entered at the end of a field
Corrected problem with laser labels not printing zip code
Corrected zip code look-up problem if WML started from
a directory other than where WML.EXE resides
09/15/94 ── 2.4t Corrected minor function key listing errors on Data Entry/
Names screen
Fixed problem with context-sensitive help topic look-up
Enhanced Address Duplicate Checking to only show duplicates
if they have the same address AND zip code
09/12/94 ── 2.4s Added logic to detect possible memory shortage problems
Improved mouse support on Backup/Restore/Format routines
09/07/94 ── 2.4r Checksum digit was being miscalculated. Also, I
misunderstood the Post Office guidelines for 11-digit
zips: they ONLY apply to bar codes. So WML will no
longer expand a 9-digit zip to 11-digits except for the
bar code. The correction character (the extra 10th or
12th digit) only applies to bar codes as well, so WML
will no longer print these except in bar codes.
Fixed an error with the CONFIG.WDT file which crept in
some time ago which caused WML to bomb.
08/27/94 ── 2.4p Fixed problem which created double index entries when
updating files to version 2.4o; this problem could also
be fixed by using File/Reindex option to index files a
second time or by re-opening the file again, in which
case WML would detect the problem and correct it. This
problem only applied to files which existed when user
upgraded to 2.4o
Fixed problem with SHARE.EXE ── this applies to networks
and most users of Windows. If you have been receiving
an error 70 (Permission Denied), this was due to the
DESCRIPT.ION file not being properly closed. Without
SHARE it didn't matter; with it, WML bombed. Also, the
DESCRIPT.ION file was being accessed exclusively (that
is, with full file locking); it is now shared so that
more than one task may access it simultaneously.
08/25/94 ── 2.4o Minor update to duplicate info window
Minor update to recall last record added to a file
Minor update to use error tone defined on Pref/Other for
dup info window
Removed F3 function key being used on State field to list
state/province names; use F1 while on State field
Minor update to show "Group" highlighted as soon as groups
are defined for an entry, rather than only after saved
Corrected zip code error which sometimes caused a city to
be associated with the wrong zip code.
Removed abbreviation checking for City field - I think it
got in the way (e.g., "St" is more commonly "Street" than
it is "Saint")
Added F1/List function for City field
Corrected problem with Times-Used and First-Use calculations
Added zip code to address index so that the same address
or box number in different post offices will no longer
generate a duplicate address warning
Corrected problem with entering extended characters using
Alt + numeric-keypad
Corrected problem with abbreviations which could expand the
string beyond the size of the field; now if there is not
enough room the abbreviation is not expanded
08/23/94 ── 2.4n Fixed problem when doing automatic 11-digit zip code
calculation for an entry with a 9-digit zip (WML would
crash if either address line contained a single word)
Added message after first sheet of laser labels is printed
Updated laser label sheet margins: WML now applies the top
margin you provide for the top & bottom margins, rather
than assuming the printer has half-inch margins.
PCL 5 scalable fonts were not being properly accessed,
resulting in 12 points always being used
Updated laser labels: 11-digit zip bar codes did not fit on
3-across label sheets; so if the labels are defined as
3-across (or more) only 5- or 9-digit zips are used for
the bar code.
Updated & expanded on-line help descriptions & topics.
Corrected problems with duplicate checking options.
08/18/94 ── 2.4m Added warning for insufficient working memory (RAM) which
could cause lock-ups
Problem fixed with specifying /M (monochrome) switch or
an alternative drive on command line
III. UPCOMING FEATURES
──────────────────────
I have a huge list of planned enhancements to WML. Suggestions from
users are very welcome & appreciated. Here are just a few of the
enhancement plans for WML:
■ Ability to prepare a disk to send to P.O. for zip code correction and
9-digit expansion. Although WML has a fixed-field ASCII export, it
does not yet meet U.S. Post Office requirements.
■ Have a single "master return address" and then a seperate return
address for each file. If the file has a return address set, then
ask for choice; otherwise use master.
■ Add a field for Internet (or other network) address
■ Ability to define an optional group file so that separate group
definitions can be associated with a list. This would make it easy
to sell a list with its associated groupings or to view a limited
number of groups for a given file.
■ Group report which shows number of entries in each group for a given
mailing list (skipping groups with zero entries).
